“HESwhat?” Brunson roared. “Get him the fuck out of there.” The

chief wasnt very happy about Gabe being on the ranch. “Listen, Chief,” Lex said, “I agree its a dangerous idea, but you know as well as I do that Gabe Vargas is a smart kid. He helped us with Cristians problems last year.”

“Im just asking for him to be listed as an official Confidential Informant, so any evidence he finds can be used in court.”

Brunson was quiet for a minute. “Its your job to make sure he doesnt get his stupid ass killed,” he finally said.

“Does that mean youre allowing it?” I asked.

Brunson shook his head. “Ill have him listed as a CI. Get out of my office.”

Lex and I left his office and sat at our desks. “I guess we just have to wait for Gabe to find something,” Lex said.

“Im not good at being patient,” I said.

“No way?” she mocked. “I didnt know that.” “Smartass.”

THAT afternoon, I had two surprise visitors. The first was Austin Shaw. “I wanted to apologize about what happened,” he said. “Austin, you got nothing to apologize for.”

“I couldve lied on the stand and denied everything,” he said.

“No, you should not have done that. You told the truth. You did the right thing.”

“Is Clayton going to be arrested again?”

“Were trying to find more evidence,” I replied. “I havent given up.”

“I want to help,” he said. “I appreciate the offer, but you need to get over this and get on with your life. Forget the asshole ever existed.”

“I wish I could,” Austin said softly. “I dont want him to hurt anyone else.”

“Ill call you if I need your help,” I said as Austin stood. We were saying goodbye when I saw Rebel walking toward me.

“Detective,” Rebel said, “I wanted to talk to you.” He noticed Austin and shot him a small smile. “Am I interrupting you?” “No, its fine,” I said. “Rebel, this is Austin Shaw.”

“Rebel? What kind of name is that?” Austin asked.

“A cool one,” Rebel retorted. “Shaw? You related to that asshat

who should be in jail? I read about all that in the paper.”

“Hes my stepfathers brother,” Austin said. “And I agree with you—he should be in jail.”

“Austin tried to help me with the case,” I told Rebel. Rebel looked at Austin with a look of respect—and attraction. “Anything else on Tobys murder?” Rebel asked me. “Whos Toby?” Austin asked.

“A friend of mine. I think your uncle killed him.”

“Hes not my uncle,” Austin snapped. “Did Clayton kill him?” he asked me.

“I think the cases are connected,” I answered. “Can I buy you lunch?” Austin asked Rebel. Rebel looked at him and tried to assess him. He looked at me with a questioning look that seemed to say, is this guy cool? I nodded at Rebel, trying to tell him Austin was a good kid.

“Sure,” Rebel finally said. They spoke and walked out without saying goodbye to me. I chuckled at the obvious attraction between the two and wished I had been able to be carefree when I was their age.
